Check List for PhD Students
Before starting your dissertation
- Application to a doctoral programme affiliated to the Faculty of Science
- Application to the Admissions Office of the University of Zurich:

During your doctoral studies
- Enter the members of the doctoral committee in the Student Admin Tool.
- Set up annual reporting to the doctoral committee.
- Attend as soon as possible any additional modules that may be required. You cannot earn a PhD without completing all of the additional requirements.
- Attend continuing education courses as required by the doctoral committee.
- Teach in your subject area as required by the doctoral programme.
- Track items 3 - 5 continuously in the milestones of the Student Admin tool.
After completing your PhD thesis
- If all milestones (apart from Committee Meeting 4 and onwards) are cleared, the PhD student can register for the doctoral examination in StudentAdmin (including uploading the dissertation).
- The Head of the committee organizes the circulation round.
- After a successful doctoral examination, the Head of the committee uploads the defence proceedings into StudentAdmin.
- If necessary, the PhD student uploads a corrected and final version of the dissertation into StudentAdmin.
- The Head of the committee releases the dissertation for publication on ZORA.
After the doctoral exam and the approval by the Commission for Student Affairs
- Publication of the dissertation in the prescribed format. Subsequent changes to the content of the thesis require the approval of the Chair of the Doctoral Committee and the Vice Dean of Studies.
- The PhD student must remain enrolled at the University of Zurich until the PhD degree certificate has been issued.
- The doctoral title may not be used until the degree certificate has been received.
