Honors and Distinctions in 2008

Konrad Basler, Full Professor of Molecular Biology, was presented with an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant by the European Research Council in 2008 for his work on "Signaling Pathways Controlling Patterning, Growth and Final Size of Drosophila Limbs".

Daniel Bernoulli, Professor Emeritus of Geology, was awarded the "Premio Internazionale della Società Geologica Italiana, Medaglia Capellini" by the Italian Geological Society.

Erwin Bolthausen, Full Professor of Mathematics with a special focus on Applied Mathematics, was presented with the "Humboldt Research Award."

Teresa B. Fitzpatrick, SNSF Assistant Professor of Plant Biology, was presented with the Latsis Prize by the Research Commission of ETH Zurich. She was also the recipient of the Friedrich Miescher Award for biochemistry.

Nicolas Goudemand, Assistant at the Institute of Paleontology, was awarded the prize for best work and best presentation in paleontology at the 6th Swiss Geoscience Meeting.

Enrico Martinoia, Full Professor of Plant Biology, was chosen to continue his adjunct professorship at Postech University in Pohang, South Korea, for another period.

Roland K. O. Sigel, SNSF Professor and Assistant Professor of (Bio-)Inorganic Chemistry, was awarded the EuroBIC Medal 2008.

Irene Tobler Borbély, Adjunct Professor of Zoology, was presented with the Pisa Sleep Award by the University of Pisa.

Daniel Wachter, Adjunct Professor of Geography, specializing in Economic Geography, was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Council of ARL, the German Academy for Spatial Research and Planning.

Rüdiger Wehner, Professor Emeritus of Zoology, specializing in Physiology, was appointed to the Austrian Science Board. He also received the King Faisal International Prize for Science, which is awarded every four years.

Michael Zemp, postdoctoral student in the Department of Geography, tied with another student from Ticino to win the "Schläfli-Preis."

Anna Beliakova, SNSF Assistant Professor at the Institute of Mathematics was called to and accepted an associated professorship for mathematics at the Aarhus University, Denmark.

Claudia Binder, SNSF Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography was called to the post of Full Professor of System Sciences at the University of Graz, Austria (decision pending).

Arnaud Brayard, Postdoctoral researcher at the Paleontological Museum was called to and accepted the post of Chargé de Recherche at the CNRS Université de Bourgogne, Dijon, France.

Dirk Burghardt, Privatdozent at the Department of Geography, GIS section, was called to and accepted the post of Professor of Cartographic Communication at the Dresden University of Technology.

Julia M. Fritz-Steuber, SNSF Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, was called to the post of Professor of Cellular Microbiology at the University of Stuttgart, Germany (decision pending).

Martin Hölzle, academic associate at the Department of Geography, Physical Geography section, was called to and accepted the post of Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Janne Ihalainen, Postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Physical Chemistry was called to and accepted the post of Professor of Nanosciences at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland.

Jasmin Joshi, Assistent at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies was called to and accepted the post W3 Professor of Botany at the University of Potsdam, Germany.

Greta R. Patzke, SNSF Assistant Professor at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry was called to, but did not accept, the post of W3 Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Saarland University, Germany.

Sergey Shadrin, Senior teaching and research assistant at the Institute of Mathematics, was called to and accepted the post of Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Roland K. O. Sigel, SNSF Assistant Professor and Assistant professor of (Bio)Inorganic Chemistry at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry was called to, but did not accept, the post of W2 Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Münster, Germany.

Frank Sprenger, Academic Associate at the Institute of Zoology, was called to and accepted the post of W2 Professor of Genetics an die University of Regensburg, Germany.
