The hug
Seeds that germinate in the dark follow a developmental programme called skotomorphogenesis. During skotomorphogenesis, the seedlings elongate in search of light and the cotyledons, the embryonic leaves, remain tightly folded to allow easy passage through the soil and protect the meristem, the region that will give rise to the plant's primary body, from damage. In this image, two Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings are germinated in the dark. The yellow colour is a fusion of two images obtained by exciting two different fluorescent proteins: the green channel by exciting RNAPol II-bound GFP and the red channel using DNA-bound mRuby. The nuclei are the visible spheres.by Filippo Maria Mirasole
