Chimpanzee paradise?
The Nimba Mountains in the south-eastern corner of Guinea (West Africa) are home to a population of critically endangered western chimpanzees. Despite its protected status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area continues to be impacted by human encroachment, extractive industries, and illegal human activities. The Nimba region is a biodiversity hotspot with many endemic species and has been internationally recognized as a priority area for chimpanzee conservation. The Nimba Chimpanzee Project conducts long-term research on these mountain chimpanzees and uses its findings to inform applied conservation strategies.by Kathelijne Koops
